Pixie

It’s a simple waking up, and ceremony of joy
when my labrador comes bounding up to greet me
every morning in a cloud of fur and frenzy.

She’s all nose, tongue and tail,
vital and visceral, tactile,
without an iota of guile,
all surprise at my routine rise,
regarding me as her prize.

She smells the sleep on me
and licks the piece of sunlight
on the sheet, divines my thoughts,
hears my fears, decodes my dreams.

It’s strange how she knows so much,
and I, mere human, can just marvel at such
perfect prescience, such a rapt touch.
