The Most Wonderful Time

why can’t it be summer?
Christmas in July but it’s not
The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

wonderful nights, black streets
houses trimmed with string lights
best with a good shaking of wet snow

wonderful mornings, even a dog
excited by the wintry cold, most humans
eager to get back to whatever warm they were doing

entire days at a desk or driving a truck
maybe in a kitchen with the radio playing
imagining others and the gifts they’ll be getting

Chuck Joy writes from Erie, PA, USA, where lake effect snow blown from Canada makes for a formidable winter. Chuck is the author of Percussive, Said the Growling Dog, and soon Vinyl.
